Current trend in tourism

The tourism industry is a dynamic industry which has witnessednumerous changes over the decades (Kamra, 2013). Tourists, whetherlocal or international have been developing new demands every day.The concerned governments and the hospitality industry have beenunder pressure to move with the trend of tourism in the varioustourist destinations. The article, “Future trends in the tourismindustry” paints a picture of an industry that is extremely dynamicand that has to keep up with the pace. There are various economic, political, and environmental, as well as security trends I thetourism sector that need to be addressed. It is useful to mentionthat the article highlights a number of trends in the tourism sector. The author has pointed to green tourism, e-tourism and social mediaas the new trends in the tourism industry (TIG, 2012). Trends such asthe emerging new modes of transport have also been pointed out in thearticle. However, one trend that is special interest to the UnitedStates and the other tourist destinations across the world is theissue of safety and security of the tourists.

There are numerous tourists who visit the United States and tourismin the US is considered as one of the biggest service industry. Itgenerates over a 100 billion dollars annually and therefore itssignificance cannot be underestimated. Any issue that affects theindustry negatively must be addressed with urgency (TIG, 2012). Thegovernment and the hospitality industry must work hand in hand inorder to safeguard the tourism industry. The issue of security hasbeen raised in the article. According to the author of the article,it is abundantly clear that the tourism industry in the USA haschanged immensely since the start of the numerous terrorist attacksin the US (TIG, 2012). Be it in the airports, hotel rooms or varioussporting activities, the threat of terrorism is real. Tourists arenow more than ever taking immense precaution when visiting the US.Their security must be guaranteed. The security of the tourists’starts from the time they are travelling, whether locally orinternationally, to their arrival, as well as when in the varioushotels.

The various terrorist attacks have changed the face of tourism. Theauthor argues that the tourism sector in a complex sector whichinvolves various stakeholders. It is clearly evident from the articlethat the stakeholders must work together in a bid to eliminate thethreat of terrorism and to assure tourists of their safety (TIG,2012). It is extremely vital to offer security for the tourists. Thistrend of terrorism is taking shape in every corner of the world, fromAfrica, to America and even in France. It is therefore true what theauthor asserts in the article about the need to have the variousstakeholders such as the government, hotel owners and securityenforcement agencies working together to ensure the security andsafety of the tourists.

An aspect that the author presents and that is extremely essentialin the tourism development of the United States is the formation ordevelopment of policies and practices that would ensure that crisisare handled effectively when they arise. There needs to be a policyin government that is specially designed for the welfare of thetourists. The policy must highlight clearly how the government seeksto protect the tourists against the various attacks from terrorists(TIG, 2012). The policy must also clearly stipulate the measures suchas the rescue plans, which the government must take to ensure thatincase an attack occurs. It is evident that this would go a long wayin assuring the tourists of their safety and security.

Due to the security issues that are a trend in the tourism industry, the author of the article has proposed that the government should setaside a special fund to cater for the security of the tourists. Thisshould go to the arming of the law enforcers who are tasked with theresponsibility of ensuring and providing security. It is alsoessential to have special budgeting for the security and safety ofthe tourists (TIG, 2012). Research in security is essential in orderto curb the trend of security threats. It is essential to havesufficient funds for the law enforcement officers. This is key toensuring that the officers are motivated and therefore providesufficient security to the tourists. Research in the security oftourists will ensure that attacks are thwarted before they occur andthis would restore and create confidence in tourists that theirsecurity is indeed guaranteed (Conrady et al., 2011). I believe thatthis step would be extremely vital especially in such a time whenterrorist attacks are common. I agree with the author that thereneeds to be a special fund and a budget to cater for the security ofthe tourists in the United States.

Another call form the author is the coordination and cooperationamongst the various stakeholders in the tourism sector to ensure thesecurity of the tourists, as well as their safety. Hotel owners, airlines, government, taxi drivers and the local population must beinvolved in the development of the security plans for the tourists(Kamra, 2013). It is clear that the security threat is a new trendand therefore the stakeholders must come together and assess thesituation. There needs to be plans and programs aimed at creatingawareness of the security situation for the tourists (TIG, 2012). Theauthor has proposed that there needs to be awareness campaigns totargeting the various stakeholders regarding the security and safetyof the tourists. It is clear from this that the role of security is auniversal role and it is the role of every person to ensure thesecurity of the other people (Conrady et al., 2011). It is essentialto include all the stakeholders in the future when dealing with theissue of security for the tourists. I agree with the author that thisis a vital and essential step. This is useful in that it will ensurethat the tourists feel comfortable and safe hence increasing thenumbers and subsequently increasing the revenue.

As the old adage goes, prevention is better than cure, it isessential to prevent crime from occurring that to deal with theeffects of the crime. This implies that the security agents in thetourism sector will have to be more vigilant in the inspection of thevarious people on transit together with the tourists. It is essentialto have thorough inspection at the airport, hotels, taxis and alsothe luggage that the tourists are carrying. This is important sincesome of the criminals pretend to be tourists. This will ensure thatthe crimes are prevented from happening. This is much better thandealing with the crime (Conrady et al., 2011). I agree with theauthor that in future it is essential to have thorough inspections. This will create the image that the government and the tourismindustry is doing enough to protect the tourists.

Lastly, the terrorist trend in the tourism sector is a complex issueto deal with. It is the role of the security agents to deal with thesituation. However, dealing with these threats require the securitypersonnel to have immense training on issue to deal with tourists’security. The security personnel need to be trained on the variousmatters to handle when dealing with tourists on transit security(TIG, 2012). These security professionals will ensure that thetourists are safe during their transits, stay and departure from thevarious destinations in the United States. I agree with the authorthat the security of the tourists need specially trained lawenforcement officers. This will ensure that the tourists are safe andsecure.

In conclusion, it is evident that the issue of terrorist attacks isa new trend in the tourism sector especially in the United States.Tourists fear for their security. This has led to a reduction in thenumber of tourists. It is baffling that some of attacks targettourists and not any other people (TIG, 2012). It is essentialtherefore to have various measures in place to protect the tourists. The various stakeholders such as the government, hotel owners, taxidrivers, airlines and the local people must work together towards thesecurity and safety of the tourists. The security agencies mustinspect and prevent these attacks from occurring rather than dealingwith them once they occur. The primary role is to create confidencein tourists that they are safe and secure in the United States(Conrady et al., 2011).
