Management Style



Managementis among the key functions that determine the going concern oforganizations. The concept of management is defined as a process thatis comprised of technical and social functions as well as activitiesthat occur within the organization (Thompson, Buchbinder &ampShanks, 2000). These functions and activities are intended to helpthe organization achieve some pre-determined objectives. The functionof management is carried out by managers who are at liberty to usedifferent management styles, including consultative, autocratic,democratic, persuasive, and chaotic.

Qualitiesof good managers

Goodmanagers can be characterized by different traits, but four of themare critical. First, good managers should be oriented towardsresults. The result oriented manager is constantly motivated toachieve some pre-determined goals, which requires the possession of acompetitive nature and the ability to take pride in achievements(Sawalha, 2014).

Secondly,good managers should be assertive. Assertive managers do not fearconfronting other people and find it easy to express themselves(Sawalha, 2014). This makes it easy for them to lead teams and makingdecisions faster compared to non-assertive managers.

Third,good managers are able to delegate responsibilities to their juniorsinstead of overloading themselves. These managers understand that theoverall objective is to add value to the organization’s operations(Sawalha, 2014). This helps managers in avoiding the lone rangeapproach and focus on ensuring that the organizational objectives areachieved using an inclusive approach. In addition, delegatingresponsibilities to other employees empowers and motivates them sinethey feel that their contribution is appreciated.

Goodmanagers are able to demonstrate leadership skills in their dailyfunctions. This means that a good manager should be able to directand organize other employees into teams (Sawalha, 2014).

Poorqualities of a manager

Apoor manager can be characterized by many traits. For example, a badmanager uses abrasive communication methods, which creates amisunderstanding within the organization (Salpeter, 2013). Inaddition, bad managers have poor planning skills and they fail toplan in advance, which subjects the organization to a situation inwhich it has to deal with emergencies. Bad managers also lackadequate decision making skills, which hinders the capacity of theorganization to achieve its long-term goals. Moreover, bad leadersapply fear tactics in an attempt to get respect from their juniors.However, fear tactics earn bad leaders disrespect and the lack oftrust from their juniors.

Changein the manager’s qualities

Thequalities of both good and bad managers do not necessary change withsituations in the environment. This is because qualities of goodleaders are genuine and part of their lives, which means that theypractice them not because they are in the work environment, butbecause they believe these qualities are worth practicing. The poorqualities of bad leaders are also inherent and bad leaders are likelyto demonstrate them in all circumstances.
