Thisessay is aimed at explaining the theories of aging and what to do inorder to achieve successful aging and prevent the onset of diseasesin our old age.

Thedamage theory of aging is based on the concept that damaged orinsufficient defense system accumulates throughout the lifespan of anindividual resulting to aging. It states that errors in transcriptionfrom DNA usually lead to errors in proteins that accumulate over theyears causing more errors in transcription. The accumulated errorsthen create an amplifying loop that finally kills the cell causingaging. An error in the repair of DNA also affects the flow ofinformation in the cells (Orgel,1973).

Programmedtheory of aging asserts that the process of aging is essential and isalso part of the biology of man. It argues that aging is usuallyprogrammed into the body system. The theory continues to argue thataging is inherent to the organism and it is not as a result of wearand tear as the damage theory suggests. It also states that aging isprogrammed into our body and that we are programmed to age and die.The evidence behind this theory is that different species die at acertain age and the fact that all the dying age of different speciesis always constant. Some changes can be made through better medicalcare and at times nutritional change but aging and death isinevitable.

Onthe other hand, successful aging refers to being in good mental,physical and psychological state during old age. Successful aging isusually determined and divided into three components: the ability tobe able to stay free from disease, the ability to function properlythat is physically and finally the ability to be socially connectedand to be productive in the society or community.

Thetheory also suggests that good eating habits in this case having abalanced diet for a meal can help one stay away or be able to resistdisease. If an individual can manage to have good eating habits, onesthat involve avoiding consumption of chemically produced foodsubstances, then one can manage to resist disease for a period oftime.

Poorcognitive function can be viewed as what marks general health status.Physical activity that is done during leisure time has proved to havesome beneficial impact on cognitive functioning among the olderadults.

Aspeople age they are encouraged to have high physical action but nottoo much to the point that it wears out an individual just a littlebit to keep fit. Too much physical function is overworking anindividual’s body and this is not healthy to the body. In order toachieve successful aging, people are advised to eat a balanced dietwhen having a meal and to engage in physical exercise during theirleisure time. The theory also advices people to avoid traditionalways of trying to keep young and embrace modern ways of keeping fitand healthy.
